Different Steps of the Coffee Bean Harvest

We see a cup of coffee as a simple moment of indulgence—the perfect accompaniment to a delicate pastry. Before it reaches your cup, however, the coffee beans embark on a remarkable journey of precision and care. This process can take up to nine months, beginning with the first elegant bloom on the coffee plant. Ultimately, we celebrate this meticulous craftsmanship in every sip, from the farmer’s mindful pruning to delicate hand milling. Consequently, we ensure the coffee we select is not just good, but a truly refined experience.

Coffee Beans: The Art of the Harvest

The journey of a coffee bean is a testament to the artistry of cultivation. It begins with a beautiful blossom and continues through several thoughtful steps:

  • Blossom: In February or March, fragrant white flowers cover the plants.
  • Green Cherry: By April or May, these flowers give way to small green cherries. This is the time for mindful pruning and weeding, ensuring the plant’s energy focuses on its most productive parts.
  • Orange Cherry: From June to August, the cherries transform into a vibrant orange-pink. Farmers continue with de-suckering and careful tending.
  • Red Cherry: The cherries ripen to a deep, blood-red hue between September and November, as they near the perfect moment for harvest.
  • Harvest: From December to January, the cherries are ready for picking. This is a moment of anticipation and preparation, since the farmer ensures the ground is clear for the harvest.
  • Pulping & Drying: After picking, the cherries are processed, either through sun drying or wet pulping, a faster method that helps maintain the bean’s weight.
  • Hand Milling: Finally, the dried beans are carefully hulled to remove the thin parchment covering. This can be done by hand, which is a testament to the artisan’s touch.
  • Ready for Roasting: Once polished and cleaned, the beans are ready to be roasted to perfection for their final destination.
